Music Theory

Monthly Music Theory Club

Emily offers a monthly music theory class taught in a small group of mixed ages and abilities. These sessions are sociable, relaxed and offer excellent value whilst being supported by a qualified teacher who is currently preparing to take Grade 8 Theory herself!

When demand is high enough (4+ students at Grade 4 standard) there is a dedicated Grade 5 Theory Class. Exam entry administration is included.

Why Study Music Theory?

Learning about the theory of music (the language and logic of the written symbols) can help musicians at all levels get the most from playing their instruments by understanding more about what they are playing and speeding up progress. Your child will build confidence in fundamental concepts such as reading music in different clefs, how rhythms and melodies are constructed and the terminology included on sheet music. Understanding the 'rules' of music then allows you to break them when you want to! There is the potential for Music Theory to take you down a highly academic and analytical route or simply give you the knowledge to listen and enjoy music with more awareness. There is no obligation to take any exams (although they are available!), but please be aware that Grade 5 Music Theory is a prerequisite for students wishing to progress to Grade 6 and above in their practical (instrument) exams. It also carries UCAS points which can help your application into College and University.
